Created by Douglas Heel, a trained physiotherapist who also studied acupuncture and Kinesiology. MA uses a system of reflexes throughout the body that wakes up the muscles. The muscles can then function at their maximum potential in strength, power, endurance and flexibility.
The applications range from improved sports performance to greater gains in training but also the release of tight structures throughout the body that cause pain and dysfunction.
Certain patterns make the body shut down, MA looks at why the body shuts down and how to interrupt those patterns i.e. rewire the templates the brain has.
MA looks at improving strength, speed, co-ordination, balance, flexibility and range of motion instantly. It highlights the connection between the mind and body with measurable differences.
If you can find the areas where the body shuts down and you can release it, then the corresponding muscle and the structures that relate to that area will immediately shift their function.
The MA workshops held at Seven Star are presented by Prolific Training owner Peri Zourides who has completed Level 1 with Douglas Heel.
Feldenkrais is a somatically educational system designed by Moshe Feldenkrais. The Feldenkrais method is designed to improve movement repertoire, aiming to expand and refine the use of the self through awareness, in order to reduce pain or limitations in movement, and promote general well-being.
Workshops are taught by Barbara Mc Crea who is South Africa’s only Feldenkrais Method ® practitioner. Trained in London, she has also explored a number of other somatic approaches in her 20 years of working as a manual and movement therapist. She works from the Wynberg Pilates Studio in Cape Town, and Renee Watson Studio.
She regularly teaches courses for physiotherapists, Pilates teachers, biokineticists and other health professionals in Johannesburg, Durban as well as Cape Town. Her special interests include Feldenkrais for equestrians and singers. Although relatively unknown in South Africa, Feldenkrais® is highly valued abroad for its contribution to retraining movement using innovative brain plasticity theories.

DNAlysis - DNA Fit
Ian Craig MSc, CSCS, INLPTA, presents the DNAlysis DNA Fit profile tests that looks at the genes that relate to three different categories of sporting performance: 1) Power and Endurance, 2) Tendon Pathology and 3) Recovery. These tests provide insight into: Individual exercise and dietary responsiveness; exercise choices for expression of health and physical performance; training patterns and nutritional intake for optimal recovery times and ‘prehabilitative’ strategies for injury avoidance.
It is an opportunity to work with clients or patients in a highly individual manner. Variation in our genes, as expressed through our DNA, has been estimated to account for 66% of athletic success, but despite this huge individual variability, many exercise practitioners continue to follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Ian is an exercise physiologist, nutritional therapist, NLP practitioner and an endurance coach. Ian edits two FSN magazines, lectures internationally on the subject and holds a nutrition/exercise clinic in Cape Town. He is the DNA Fit consultant for DNAlysis Biotechnology.
Alexander Technique is a simple and practical method that helps improve co-ordination, find new ways to deal with stress and pain, and support fuller enjoyment of life activities
The approach is playful, encouraging curiosity about habitual processes. The teachers will facilitate group explorations and give individual guidance using words and touch.
