The Art of Gratitude

grat·i·tude (grăt′ĭ-to̅o̅d′, -tyo̅o̅d′)

n.
The state of being grateful; thankfulness.

Yesterday just as my training started the buzzer rang for the front the door of the centre. Upon opening it I was greeted by a mother and her son. The mom asked if we still offer Kids Kung Fu classes and I reluctantly had to tell her we don’t anymore.

She then proceeded to tell me about her child who had had 8 brain surgeries in 5 years.

I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.

For the next 15 minutes the mother and I spoke about what they had been through, difficulties they face and how they want to improve their health.

All the while this young boy swung from the bars, crawled on the floor, took his shoes off, climbed the ropes and smiled. It was remarkable to see and considering what he’s been through that he can still move so well.

After they left I felt a bit motionless, here I was worried about my military press workout and how hard the the routine is yet I am able to stand, walk, twist, move, bend, jump, roll and do almost everything I tell my body to do without any pain or discomfort.

An overwhelming sense of gratitude came over me but also made me realise how selfish so many of us can be. Worried only about body fat percentage, the weight we lift or reps we do, yet the basic act of walking and being able to play is so difficult for so many.

Every situation is relative but who ever you are, wherever you are be thankful for the beauty and strength your body has.

Be grateful
